The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary, research-oriented program for Master’s and PhD students, offered by the Heidelberg University Cognitive Science Network. The Network provides all courses, and its members serve as instructors and examiners. In this lunch session we will have a look at France, whose academic system is largely comparable to Germany. But there are also differences. Especially the standard practices for doctoral education have undergone a significant change in the last 20 years. Among other things, the RNCD – Réseau National des Collèges Doctoraux (https://www.rncdfrance.fr/ ) has been established. The RNCD can be regarded as a kind of „french UniWinD“. How is the quality of the doctorate ensured in France, for example through cross-university exchange in the RNCD? Are there similar problems or debates? COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and beyond and enable researchers and innovators to grow their ideas in any science and technology field by sharing them with their peers. COST Actions are bottom-up networks with a duration of four years that boost research, innovation and careers. On 16.09. und 06.10.2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on each date, the German Coordination Office for COST will offer open virtual consultation hours for applicants of new COST actions. Fever has long been a threatening and inescapable feature of the human condition; as the German poet Friedrich Hebbel noted in 1860, “He who would live must hazard the fever.” For centuries, “fever” denoted a disease marked by various sensations – heat, but also an altered pulse, or delirium. Only from the 1840s onward was fever reduced to quantifiable temperature, and reframed as a symptom of diverse diseases, which from the late 1800s onward came to be associated with specific pathogens. Today, the re-emergence of old and the emergence of new infectious diseases rank among the principal challenges facing humankind. This multidisciplinary summer school brings together perspectives from the life and natural sciences as well as the humanities to re-examine the multifaceted nature of fever. Topics include epidemics and pandemics of febrile illnesses; their prevention, including vaccines and their societal acceptance (or resistance); the sensory register of fever, including but exceeding heat and temperature, e.g. its production, theorisation, and effects on the body; disease causation, e.g. through pathogens and vectors; and febrile sequelae, post-acute infectious syndromes, and the narratives of sufferers unable to fully recover from febrile infectious diseases. Taken together, these approaches invite a renewed reckoning with fever as both a biological phenomenon and a social and cultural object. The Academy is aimed at Master students as well as PhD candidates. A participation fee of 100€ - including room and board - will be charged. Travel costs are to be covered by the participants themselves. Participants are expected to present the current status of their work in a poster session and as a short pitch. The graduate workshop kicks off the conference “Reading Between the Lines: Pragmatics of the Unspoken” (September 23–25, 2026) and offers early-career researchers a supportive setting to present their own projects and discuss them in depth in a small group. The discussion will take Arendt’s magnum opus, “The Origins of Totalitarianism”, as its starting point and address the following questions: How can we explain the growing yearning for supposedly strong leaders, for strictness and harshness? Why does it seem that individual and collective freedom is being so recklessly put at risk? In light of declining trust in state institutions and a growing distance from democratic values, the question arises: How can liberal societies become more resilient in the face of authoritarian and fascist tendencies? How can democracy counter the new appeal of authoritarian “proposals”? | |||

The Faculty of Psychology at the University of Havana opens its doors to the XIV edition of the International Meeting of Psychology Students, which will be held in Havana from October 26 th to 30 th, 2026. Faced with a global panorama that often fragments, polarizes, and confronts us with crisis realities, we choose a different response: to weave. In the native cultures of our Americas, weaving was never a solitary act. It is a collective gesture where knowledge, memory, and resistance intertwine to form a stronger and more beautiful product. It was a way of transmitting wisdom between generations, of building community, and, at crucial moments, of tracing routes toward hope together. We propose this meeting as a space to “weave science”: a science that places the human being at the center; a practice that cannot be a loose thread but must intertwine with the diverse, and often harsh, realities we inhabit, to shape a more dignified product. The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Gender & Queer Studies is an interdisciplinary, research-oriented, and professionally relevant program for master’s and doctoral students, designed to help graduates develop a personalized profile for research and/or future professional practice. The CAS is open to students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines. The interdisciplinary course offerings are continuously expanded in line with the development of Gender Studies across the various disciplinary fields at Heidelberg University. The Gender & Queer Studies CAS is designed to enable students to apply theoretical and methodological approaches from Gender & Queer Studies to various topics, to recognize mechanisms of discrimination, and to address and communicate gender-related issues in an interdisciplinary manner. By learning to link different bodies of knowledge, they contribute to shaping gender-just and reflexive-critical discourses and practices in academia and professional practice. What is eDOCation all about? eDOCation is the first online platform where young scientists ("eDOCs") offer continuing education for companies. I launched the initiative together with my former doctoral colleague Tobias Hornig (now a data scientist at Siemens). The platform contributes to the transfer of knowledge from universities into business practice and to improving the financial situation and future prospects of doctoral students, postdocs and junior professors. Market research conducted by us has shown that our eDOCs could earn a high three-digit € amount for a two-hour research workshop in companies. At the same time, eDOCation offers companies and their employees the opportunity to benefit from state-of-the-art science in the sense of lifelong learning and to gain access to the country's brightest minds as mentors in the "war for talent". The company is currently being promoted by the Stifterverband as one of the “30 best ideas for the education, science and innovation system of tomorrow” as part of the WIRKUNG HOCH 100 initiative. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) administers the scholarship programme “Hilde Domin Programme” with funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA). The programme serves to support students and doctoral candidates from across the globe, who are at risk of being formally or de facto denied educational or other rights in their country of origin, and to provide these students and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to begin or complete a study or research degree at a higher education institution in Germany. Students and doctoral candidates funded under the programme will receive a scholarship for a degree course of personal choice and according to individual qualifications. The scholarship is sufficient to cover the necessary costs incurred during their study or research stay. Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the Hilde Domin Programme but are nominated by the management (presidiums/rectorates) of an institution or organisation which is a legal entity domiciled in Germany and which carries out an activity in the field of science, research and teaching and/or the protection of human rights, the promotion of peace and democracy or the rule of law. | |||
The Azrieli Visiting PhD Fellowship enables outstanding international PhD candidates to conduct short-term research in Israel, fostering collaboration with leading researchers. Fellows become part of a dynamic academic environment, enhancing their professional growth and expanding their scientific network. The fellows will receive a stipend of 12,000 ILS per month for four months. The programme invites them to collaborate and furthers their professional development. | |||
As in the past two years, the Gini Foundation (Fondazione Gini), in partnership with the University of Padova, is offering study and research grants for a total amount of €25,000. These grants are intended to support non-Italian graduates holding a Master of Science degree in disciplines related to agriculture, engineering, mathematical, physical and natural sciences. Doctoral students and graduates with a master’s degree who are enrolled at a partner university of the 4EU+ Alliance may apply for the university diploma in “Entrepreneurial and Intrapreneurial Project Management.” The program is designed for anyone who wishes to gain practical experience in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship, and project management in an international setting—whether as an intrapreneur in large companies, in innovative startups, or in the field of social and environmental transformation. The hybrid program runs from November 2026 to June 2027 and is jointly offered by the eight universities of the 4EU+ Alliance. | |||
The Research Council of the Field of Focus in the Natural and Engineering Sciences (FoF2) aims to stimulate innovative research by harnessing the interdisciplinary potential of the Heidelberg campus to identify and develop emerging research fields. It therefore supports proposals that initiate new interdisciplinary research nuclei and open novel research directions at Heidelberg University. The Research Centre on Antigypsyism (RCA) at the Heidelberg University’s Department of History (Centre for European History and Cultural Studies) announces a research fellowship with an annual funding amount of 20,000 € and with project start date January 1st, 2027 (or between January 1st and May 1st, 2027, depending on the kind of scholarship; see below). The research fellowship – initiated by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation – pays tribute to the decades-long commitment of Romani Rose, Chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, to human and civil rights. The Romani Rose Fellowship is awarded to particularly gifted and committed researchers from countries in the European Union. Applicants are invited to present a research proposal on a self-selected topic. The research topic should be related to antigypsyism studies or a related field, such as racism research. The Heidelberg Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HGGS) invites applications for Graduate Membership. We are looking for motivated doctoral candidates with an interest in interdisciplinary research. Heidelberg University provides through the HGGS an interdisciplinary programme and certificate in the Humanities, Law and Social Sciences, which offers valuable experiences in cross-disciplinary methodological expertise, interdisciplinary teamwork, science communication as well as international workshops and PhD-led conferences. The HGGS programme complements and supports the regular doctoral training at the faculties and it can be adapted to fit individual doctoral research paths. Next to regular admission procedures, scholarship recipients of the Landesgraduiertenförderung (LGF) and the Begabtenförderungswerke (funding organizations for the promotion of young talent) as well as research assistants at one of the six participating faculties qualify for Fast-Track Admission in the HGGS. | |||
Participants are invited to submit COST Action proposals contributing to the scientific, technological, economic, cultural or societal knowledge advancement and development of Europe. Multi- and interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged. The Open Call Action proposal submission, evaluation, selection and approval (SESA) procedure is fully science and technology-driven and will ensure a simple, transparent and competitive proposal evaluation and selection process, reflecting the bottom-up, open and inclusive principles of COST. Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) are exchange visits aimed at supporting individual mobility and training of researchers and innovators through general activities of Working Groups. These visits must take place at a host organization located in a country different from that of your affiliation. STSM applicants must be enrolled in an official research programme as a PhD Student or postdoctoral fellow (completion of their PhD within the last eight years). An STSM ought to support the scientific advancement of the FLAVOURsome COST Action while simultaneously providing participants with access to unique data, instruments, and methodologies that are unavailable within their own institutions and enabling them to acquire new skills. Each year, a small number of STSMs will be granted for technology transfer and training across laboratories in various member nations enrolled in the Action, as specified by the COST framework rules. The last day of the short-term scientific mission should be no later than 30th September to guarantee the reimbursement. | |||

The fellowship are intended for life scientists who wish to pursue a career in science journalism and journalists who wish to deepen and broaden their knowledge of the latest research fields and technologies. Fellows will receive stipends for a duration of three to twelve months to fund stays in media outlets of any type, editorial offices or research institutions of their choice to help advance their careers. Life scientists applying must have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or higher, and must have published samples of any kind of their work in science journalism on topics related to basic biological research. Applicants must reside in one of the 31 EMBC Member States. Applications can be submitted throughout the year, with three selection rounds per year. All complete applications received by 1 February, 1 June or 1 October will be considered. All applicants will be notified no later than four weeks after the respective selection deadline. | |||
The Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) grant funds a visit to a host organization located in a different country by a researcher for specific work to be carried out and for a determined period of time. These exchange visits aim to support individual mobility, train young researchers, and foster collaboration between institutions through the activities of the Action’s Working Groups. Each year, several STSMs will be funded to promote the exchange of techniques, knowledge, and expertise between laboratories in different COST Member States. An STSM must directly contribute to the scientific objectives of the TEAR-Precision COST Action (CA24112), while enabling participants to acquire new skills, access specific data, instruments, and methods not available at their home institutions. A maximum of €4000 can be awarded. STSM applicants must meet one of the following criteria: - Be engaged in an official research programme as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. - Be employed by, or affiliated with, an institution, organisation, or legal entity with a clear research remit. - Applicants must be from a COST Participating country. The TEAR-Precision STSM grant calls are open on a continuous, first-come, first-served basis. Please apply 3 months before the proposed starting date. In view of the dramatic situation in Ukraine, the Vector Foundation would like to offer low-threshold support to refugee scientists quickly and unbureaucratically. To this end, the Vector Foundation provides funding to universities and research institutions in Baden-Württemberg to temporarily employ fled Ukrainian researchers in existing working groups and projects. Universities, colleges and research institutions in Baden-Württemberg can apply for the funding together with the guest researcher. The funding will be paid out in the form of a fixed sum of 25,000 € per funded person. This call is open to all subject areas.
