This workshop addresses aspects of the defense related to communication and presentation. We will work on participants’ body language as well as on strategies for convincing argumentative and rhetorical positioning during the disputation. A significant portion of the workshop will be devoted to simulated defenses and evaluations of the performances.

02.07.2026; 9 am-3 pm; Dr. Markus Burger (Slidewriting.de), online

The goal of this training is to prepare and develop self-explanatory slides and a storyline from your own research findings, e.g. for a conference, a project presentation or your thesis defense. This training focuses on the logic of good presentations.

07. & 08.07.2026 - course language German; 9 am-3 pm; Kai Hüwelmeyer (Institut für Argumentationskompetenz), online

In dem Seminar werden die wichtigsten Prinzipien der Logik erarbeitet (Gültigkeit und Schlüssigkeit von Argumenten etc.). Hieraus werden Techniken zum schriftlichen und mündlichen Argumentieren abgeleitet und trainiert.

For better or for worse, people judge our intelligence and our trustworthiness by our voice and the way we use it. For professional academics, this is key when it comes to presenting their research, giving a lecture, or putting their best selves forward in an interview.

In this workshop, we will discuss how to tell a good story and common bad habits scientists have when writing for the public. Participants will practice writing short pieces based on their own work or interests that will be shared and discussed during the workshop.

16., 23. & 30.07.2026; 1-5 pm; Dr. Boyana Boneva & Dr. Kevin Leiss (codeprehensible), online

This course introduces the general-purpose programming language Python, which is used by web developers, data scientists and machine learning experts. Understanding the basics of Python will allow you to grasp the concepts of tools you might encounter and quickly apply them to your own research.

22. & 23.07.2026; 9:30 am-16:15 pm; Dr. Julia Verse, Team Scientific Integrity, online

The participants will explore the differences and grey areas between good scientific practice, questionable research practice and scientific misconduct. They will learn how misconduct can be recognized and prevented, and how it should be addressed and dealt with in case it occurs, and what damage it can cause if handled improperly.
