Online Open Science information and training resources

Overview/Introduction

The Open Science movement aims at sharing scientific insights with the broadest possible audience of experts as well as interested lay people. Open Science is seen to play a pivotal role for the cause of scientific progress, be it in terms of widening participation across the globe and across individual parts of populations, in terms of making the results of investments covered by tax payers’ contributions more readily available or in terms of founding measures and programs based strictly on facts and findings rather than impressions and feelings.

Opens Science is the umbrella term for a plethora of different aspects of modern societies, including but not limited to Open Access, Open Source (Software), Open Data, Open Innovation and many others.

Keywords: Open Science (definition), Open research (best practices), Open Access, Open Access Author, Open Access Publishing, Open/FAIR Data, Research Data Management, Sharing data, Sharing preprints, Open Data Ethics, Data protection, Open Peer Review, Plan S,  Open Licensing, Open Clouds, Open Policies, Open Source, Open source software and workflows, Open Innovation

4EU+ – Open for you! An introduction series to open science

The institutions united within the 4EU+ Alliance (Sorbonne University, Charles University, University of Copenhagen, University of Milan, Heidelberg University and University of Warsaw) organized a series of training meetings to discover and explore all aspects of open science. The presentations and recordings of the meetings are now available online. PhD students, senior researchers, research support or anyone who is just curious — everyone is welcome to learn about open science!

List of workshops:

  •     What is Open Science?
  •     Cycle of scientific publication: an overview
  •     What are my funders requirements on Open Science? A focus on Plan S
  •     Strategies for publishing in Open Access journals
  •     Data Management Plans - one tool with many applications
  •     Predatory publishers and identity fraud - how to identify dubious providers
  •     Publication strategies for monographs in Humanities and Social Sciences
  •     Research Data Management - Introduction to FAIR and Open Data
  •     Open Research Software
  •     Open science and the role of rights management
  •     Humanities and FAIR data
  •     Citizen Science: producing data with people for innovating research

“The practice of peer review is evolving to become more open. This pathway will help you to understand the move towards Open Peer Review and equip you to be able to participate - both as an author and as a reviewer.”
Chapters:

  • Open peer review
  • Managing and sharing research data
  • Open source software and workflows

Module 2 - The responsible data sharer

“Sharing data is great but you need to know what data you can share, with whom you can share, when to share, and how best to share. This pathway will equip you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions about sharing your data responsibly.”
Chapters:

  • What is open science?
  • Managing and sharing research data
  • Data protection and ethics,
  • Open licensing

Module 3 - The reproducible research practitioner

“Recent studies have revealed a reproducibility crisis for published findings. This pathway will help you to make sure that your published findings can stand up to scrutiny and serve as a solid foundation for others to build upon.”
Chapters:

  • What is Open Science?
  • Best practice in open research
  • Open Access publishing
  • Managing and sharing research data
  • Open source software and workflows

Module 4 - The open innovation accelerator

“The notion that innovation happens within set boundaries is being challenged. This pathway will provide you with the skills you need to spot opportunities and to build open innovation aspects into your research.”
Chapters:

  • Open Science and innovation
  • Managing and sharing research data
  • Open licensing

Module 5 - The open access author

“There is more to consider when publishing for open access than simply selecting a ‘green’ or ‘gold’ route. This pathway will help you to look at publishing in a more holistic way to ensure that your publications, underlying data and software are accessible and can be used to support your findings.”
