Workshops with Sir Philip Campbell (Springer Nature)

 

As the first "Springer Nature Guest Professor" the longtime Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Nature publishing company and former editor of the renowned journal "Nature", Sir Philip Campbell, will join Heidelberg University for the 2019 summer semester. The Workshops offered by Professor Campbell during the second half of his visiting professorship are aimed in particular toward advanced Master’s students as well as doctoral and postdoctoral candidates. The events will cover the following topics:

 

Workshop 1:    'Behind the scenes in research publishing, editing, and the author experience'

We will discuss the processes and issues in research publishing, the research paper and book of the future, open research, and the societal impacts of research outputs.

Workshop 2:      ‘Unhealthy academic cultures in biomedical research’

We will examine aspects of research cultures that undermine research, aspects that help keep research robust, and explore and develop constructive systemic approaches by universities, funders, publishers and individual researchers. We will develop recommendations for Heidelberg University and/or other institutions.

                              Target group: Postdocs and junior group leaders from the Medical Faculties (HD and MA) / The capacity for new participants is limited.

 

Workshop 3:      ‘Researcher's communications, public perceptions and public trust’

We will explore areas of research that are publicly controversial, factors that underlie the controversies, and ways in which researchers and their institutions have successfully and unsuccessfully addressed the issues. We will develop recommendations for how researchers should be engaging in public debates. There will be a contribution by the head of Germany's Science Media Centre, Volker Stollorz.

Workshop 4:      ‘Multidisciplinarity and Computer Science: are there generic problems to be solved?’

We will explore opportunities and challenges arising in the practice of multidisciplinary research, with particular focus on research involving computer science. We will include interdisciplinary issues of diverse research cultures, concepts, language, the formulation of research problems, publication, and incentives and prestige that differ between disciplines. After an introductory overview, the discussion will be led by the workshop participants, who should bring examples of multidisciplinary research and the challenges to the workshop.

Please note that these workshops were first scheduled in February 2019 but had to be postponed. Therefore, the capacities for new participants are limited.
