How do I Become a Doctoral Student at the University of Heidelberg?
Doctoral training is not centrally governed at the University and there is no central admissions office to which you can apply. Instead, each of the twelve academic faculties governs and regulates doctoral training for that faculty and is responsible for the application and admissions procedure for their own doctoral students.
The procedure for applying for doctoral training in Heidelberg will depend on whether you wish to carry out your training individually or within a structured program. Detailed information about applying and registering as a doctoral candidate is available in German and English in our Information Brochures
. The basic steps are outlined below.

Doctoral training in a structured doctoral program
Each program has its own application and admissions procedures. Once you have decided to which program you wish to apply, please contact the chair of the program as listed on the program website or follow the directions on the appropriate website for applying. Please note that also in the case of structured programs, it is necessary to have a doctoral supervisor and to be admitted to appropriate faculty. Please go to the following page for a complete list of structured doctoral programs in Heidelberg:
Please be aware that due to the high number of inquiries that we receive, the Graduate Academy and other central University facilities can not initiate contact on your behalf with potential supervisors or with structured programs.
